A Billion People

posted by Philip Jinadu, category:
news

We've set our hearts on raising money for the poor, the oppressed and the needy. That means that the money we raise is being split three ways - international development (the poor), global justice (the oppressed) and local concerns (the needy).

On the global justice front, we're partnering with Tear Fund to do something about the oppression suffered by entire communities due to a lack of access to clean water. We think it's profoundly unjust that nearly a billion people in our world don't have this basic human right. We're not happy that 5,000 children a day die as a result. It's 2012 and noboby should be dying because of dirty water and unsanitary living conditions.

Tear Fund have provided us with this video showing how Love Running money is going to be used to provide clean water for a community of around 6.000 people in Kigezi, Uganda. It's inspiring stuff.

The Final Word is Love

It's just 9 weeks to go to Race Day. Your training should have started, you should be beginning to put your sponsorship campaign out there.

In my experience this beginning phase can often be a bit of a challenge. I thought I'd send you a little encouragement to boost you on your way.

We've put together a short clip, set to music, from the Launch Seminar.

"This whole process of Love Running is going to change you. It's actually going to make you a bigger person, it's going to give you a bigger vision for the world you're in.

It's actually going to change the way you view yourself. You're going to do things you never thought you could do before.

Why We're Running

posted by Philip Jinadu, category:
news

With just two weeks to go till the official Launch of Love Running 2012, it's now time to unveil the official charities that we're raising money for.

Love Running sets out to help ordinary people get fit, get friends and change the world by raising money for three distinct areas - the poor, the oppressed and the needy.

A third of the money we raise will once again go to our long term partnership project in Zimbabwe. Since Love Running was launched we've supported a World Vision area development programme in one of the poorest parts of Zimbabwe. It's now the biggest programme of its kind in the country and we are the sole supporters.

The second third of the money is going to provide clean water and sanitation to a community of 6,000 people in rural Uganda. Currently young girls are forced to walk for 3-4 hours a day to collect water, leaving them vulnerable to injury, rape, disease and a disrupted education. We believe it is unjust that 900 million people worlwide have no access to clean water, with the result that 5,000 children die each day. We want to do something about it.

Love Running is Back, Back, Back!

posted by Philip Jinadu, category:

Get fit, get friends, change the world.

A simple slogan but one that's resonated with a huge number of people. When we first launched Love Running in 2009 we thought we might get a few dozen people to sign up. Our ultimate goal was for a hundred.

So when 300 people eventually signed up and put on the red t-shirt we were, quite frankly, amazed.

New charity working for ex-offenders

posted by Tim Dobson, category:
news

If you have been in prison, getting back to work can be a big problem. In the current job climate, who would want to employ you? Without work there is a significant chance that you will reoffend.

Paul Harrod from our church has recently set up an amazing charity, giving jobs and training opportunities to ex-offenders. His work was one of the features on this week's BBC1 "Inside Out West" programme. If you missed it, you can see it by clicking here (the feature starts at 10.12 mins). If you would like to find out more about the initiative called Bristol Together you can go to their website www.bristoltogether.co.uk.

It's wonderful to see Christian entrepreneurs setting up Kingdom initiatives!

Highgrove Church is joining with the other churches in the local area to open a Community Cafe in the heart of Sea Mills. Located on Sea Mills Square, it is anticipated that the cafe will open in early December 2011.

People from the churches and the local community will be volunteering in the cafe and it is hoped that a number of different activities will take place in the venue, such as coffee mornings for the elderly, after-school homework clubs and parenting courses.

Sat 8th Oct sees the fourth Single Parents Fair running at the Greenway Centre on Doncaster Rd in Southmead. It is an event for any lone parent family in Bristol. While the children are entertained with face painting, craft activities, street dance training and much more, the mums (and a few brave dads) will be treated to free pampering, including massage, professional haircuts and nail art. There will be professional family photos being taken and advice available from a number of agencies. There will be quality secondhand clothes and toys for each family to take home with them. The whole event is free and will be a touch of God's love on earth.

We need almost a hundred volunteers to make the event run smoothly. If you would like to volunteer please contact catatparentsfair [dot] info.

Magical Mystery Tour

posted by Woodlands News, category:

The following article was posted in the summer newsletter for Sightseeing Bristol:

Mark's Open Top Bus Tour is Back!

After the success of his 'History of Christianity in Bristol' open top bus tour in 2010, Mark Van De Poll has once again joined forces with City Sightseeing; now making the tour available to church groups.

"Bristol has been home to men and women who changed the course of history by putting their faith into action to fight for justice, equality, freedom and truth.” says Mark. “My passion is to uncover the story of who we are as a people. How did we get to where we are, and what is our own personal part to play in our lifetime?”

Looking at William Tyndale, George Whitefield, John and Charles Wesley, George Muller and Mary Carpenter, the tour also explores three fascinating periods: ‘Medieval Bristol - A city built on prayer’,’ The Reformation - Bristol leads the way out of the Dark Ages’, and ‘The Spiritual Enlightenment - Bristol as the gateway to a faith revival’.

Autumn Events at Woodlands

posted by David Mitchell, category:
news

Schools are soon going back, holidays are finishing, the days are shorter and I can feel the familiar September adrenalin in my body in this season when everything starts up again.  Bristol has felt remarkably quiet, and parking has been less of a nightmare over the summer.  As well as regular vacations, lots of people from Woodies have spent significant time at Shepton Mallet this year, with large groups at New Wine, Soul Survivor and Momentum.  I hope that we will come back together with renewed spiritual energy and ambition, and as the nation does some soul-searching after the riots, we will be ready for some soul searching as we seek to re-engage with our mission in Bristol and beyond.
